Case study: Woolworths

Case study: Woolworths

Woolworths Limited group is the second largest private employer in Australia and has more than 700 supermarkets serving over 13 million customers weekly across Australia.  The group is comprised of over 15 brands including Woolworths, Big W, Dick Smiths Powerhouse, Tandy, Safeway and BWS.

The challenge

In 2005, Woolworths was positioning itself for more streamlined operations. This required the positive integration of personnel. To achieve this goal a relocation which involved the amalgamation of approximately 2600 staff from nine sites into a new National Support Centre in Norwest Business Park was required.

Atlantis was initially engaged as a pre-relocation consultant. We were then chosen to take on the entire relocation process and provide additional support services to enable the Woolworths management team to get on with the project of restructuring the business.

What made this a Smart Move

By appointing two full-time and one part-time Strategic Planner to work onsite for the duration of the project, Atlantis created a highly collaborative and responsive environment. As a total relocation partner, Atlantis was able to study and understand the Woolworths culture and build familiarity with premises and staff. This strategy also allowed for more effective decision making, planning and change management activities to take place.

Extensive auditing and documentation involving staff, equipment, filing and storage data set the scene for the successful relocation of such a large number of personnel. The strategy provided solutions which were consistent with Woolworths’ internal policies and corporate culture.

Atlantis documentation proved to be a tremendous asset to the relocation process due to its level of detail. So effective was our documentation system, it was subsequently used by Woolworths as original source data for a new Space and Resource Management System.

Results

Using Atlantis’ expertise and unique methodology, Woolworths was able to achieve its goal on this highly ambitious project. Following handover and the exit of Atlantis’ Strategic planners, the organisation was ready for business and could enjoy a stable work environment.
